The California Nudes
As summer draws to a close, we are pleased to present a group of photographs by André De Dienes, one of the masters of the nude in nature.
Long before De Dienes’s name became synonymous with his iconic photographs of a young Marilyn Monroe, he had already established a singular photographic vision rooted in the landscapes and spirit of the American West. While Monroe's image would ultimately secure his place in popular culture, his full body of work belongs to a broader tradition of West Coast photography that celebrates nature, freedom, and the human body as inseparable expressions of beauty.
Born in Hungary in 1913, de Dienes emigrated to America during the late 1930s, eventually settling in California, where the landscape profoundly shaped his artistic philosophy. Unlike many of his East Coast contemporaries, whose fashion and portrait photography was defined by studios and controlled lighting, de Dienes sought expansive beaches, deserts, and mountain landscapes. His models were not placed against nature—they became part of it. This approach aligned him with a distinctly California sensibility that emerged in the decades before and after the Second World War. Artists, architects, and designers on the West Coast embraced a lifestyle that valued openness, a healthy sensuality, and a close relationship with the natural world. For De Dienes, the nude became as much an expression of harmony between humans and the landscape as an object of eroticism.
Along with their technical proficiency and the beauty of his prints, what distinguishes De Dienes's photographs is their remarkable sense of ease. His images feel spontaneous and unforced, celebrating both the individuality of the sitter and the grandeur of the environment. Natural light allows nature an equal place alongside the figure. (We see this in many of De Dienes’s photographs of the nineteen-year-old Norma Jeane Dougherty before the invention of "Marilyn Monroe”.) However, to view De Dienes only through the lens of celebrity is to overlook his larger achievement. His photographs incorporate many of the themes that woulddefine California photography: natural light, environmental portraiture, informality, and a healthy vision of the body.
