JONATHAN SMITH
“Out of the Blue”
June 24 – August 19, 2023

Danziger Gallery Los Angeles is pleased to announce our representation of the British born photographer Jonathan Smith. His first show with the gallery, “Out of the Blue”, will open in Santa Monica on June 24th. The show focuses on several bodies of work shot over a 15 year period - “Streams” which plays the startling blues of the meandering bodies of water against the snowfields they run through in vibrant yet abstract terms; “Falls” which more dreamily capture the beauty of the waterfalls that Iceland’s geology and geography cause to proliferate; Capri diptychs; and photographs from the east and west coast in Smith’s ongoing “Horizon” series.

An accomplished large format photographer, Smith spent the early years of his career assisting and printing for renowned photographer Joel Meyerowitz before embarking on his own in 2010. Since then he has had solo exhibitions in the United States and internationally.

Smith’s work consists of large scale, highly nuanced color photographs of the stark natural beauty and inherent impermanence of landscapes. He has photographed in Iceland, Patagonia, the Amalfi Coast, Provincetown, Malibu, Miami, and up and down the east and west coasts of America.

He has been the recipient of a number of awards for his work including The Hearst Biennial Award, The Magenta Foundation Award, and the PDN Annual Awards. His work has appeared in numerous magazines including The Smithsonian, The Royal Photographic Society, PDN and Art and Architecture.

He received his B.A at the University for Creative Arts in Canterbury U.K and a diploma in Documentary Practice and Visual Journalism at the International Center for Photography in New York. His work is in the collections of the Museum of the City of New York, The Maison Europeéne de la Photographie, and the Victoria and Albert Museum among others.

He now lives and maintains a studio in Brooklyn.
